General Information

Joomla! is a content management system (CMS) that is used as a back-office for millions of websites on the World Wide Web and intranets. Its ease-of-use and continuous improvements have made it one of the most popular CMS software solutions. According to the Usage Statistics and Market Share of Content Management Systems for Websites report conducted in February 2012 Joomla! is the second popular CMS after WordPress.

The key factors of Joomla! popularity are:

  • Joomla! is a free CMS
  • Joomla! is open source distributed under GNU GPL v2 license, which means there are literally tons of software developers who are participating in its development
  • There are over 9000 free and paid extensions that can transform your website according to your needs
  • Joomla! is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database which allow less expensive hosting solutions to be used.

The leader of the Joomla! project Andrew Eddie was working on another CMS project called Mambo which was rather successful in 2005. In August 2005 some changes started to occur. The new stakeholders of the Mambo project changed the previous agreement and wanted the software to be a proprietary product. As a result, the team of developers led by Eddie decided to leave Mambo and continue their work on an open source, free CMS. Their efforts resulted in the first release of Joomla! on September 16th, 2005.

In August 2005 the team asked the community to suggest a name for the CMS. Their rapid response brought several hundreds of potential names, but the final decision was made for a name that wasn't on that list. The team decided to choose the name 'Joomla' that is the English version of the Swahili word "jumla" which in Swahili means 'all together' or 'as a whole'.

By 2012, Joomla! had been downloaded more than 30 million times and the number of Joomla!-powered websites is over 100 million.

The latest version of Joomla! (2.5) was released on January 24, 2012. According to the plans of the community, in September 2012 there will be a new release of Joomla! (3.0).
